SUPPORTING STUDENTS WITH AUTISM IN THE MAINSTREAM CLASSROOM
Understanding Autism

Autism is a spectrum diagnosis, meaning that individuals with autism can exhibit a wide range of characteristics, from severe impairments to high-functioning abilities. On one end of the spectrum, children may have difficulty speaking or communicating, while on the other end, they may be able to attend school and participate in mainstream activities, but still face challenges with social skills and learning.

Prevalence of Autism

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in America, one in thirty-six children receive an autism diagnosis. Similar statistics are reported around the world, indicating a growing need for educators to understand and support students with autism.

Ilana will present evidence-based strategies for supporting students with autism in the mainstream classroom, including:

  • Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA): a scientific and evidence-based teaching methodology for autism
  • Accommodations and modifications to cater for the unique needs of students with autism
  • Case studies: including strategies for supporting higher functioning teenagers with autism, non-verbal children, and students with behavioral challenges
  • Personal Journey and Expertise: Ilana will share her personal journey with autism, including the treatments she followed to support her two sons who received an autism diagnosis. Her husband, Martin, will also share his perspective as a father and offer valuable advice to parents.
