If you’re worrying about your child’s behaviour, speech, learning, or social skills, we’re here to bring clarity and a practical plan you can act on straight away.
Many parents arrive feeling overwhelmed by conflicting advice and unsure which steps will truly make a difference. Our role is to listen carefully, understand your child’s unique profile, and translate years of professional and lived experience into an actionable pathway that delivers measurable progress and renewed confidence.
At Star Academy, every child’s journey begins with a thorough understanding of their developmental needs. We create a holistically sensible foundation, the right conditions for learning and growth, by taking into account all the factors that influence progress. From nutrition and environment to daily routines and emotional well-being, we consider the whole child before designing the next steps forward.
WHAT WE DO
We engineer a developmental plan to achieve the best possible results for each individual child. Our process draws on twenty years of experience and combines scientific research with hands-on understanding of what works in real families.
We bring together a multidisciplinary team so that every aspect of your child’s development is addressed – behaviour, communication, motor, academic, social, and daily living skills. Where needed, we collaborate with or refer you to trusted medical professionals to ensure that appropriate testing or specialist input informs the educational plan.
In practical terms, this means we help you put the pillars of treatment in place – sleep, nutrition, environment, and emotional regulation – while our Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) experts begin teaching the core developmental skills that unlock learning.
We see ourselves as childhood developmental engineers: just as engineers design structures to stand strong on firm foundations, we design learning programs that support long-term independence and quality of life. The result is genuine progress, and with progress comes hope.
WE DESIGN AN INDIVIDUALISED PROGRAMME
No two children with autism are alike, and no two Star Academy programmes are either.
Each one is engineered for the child we meet, built around their current abilities, interests, and the goals most relevant to their stage of development.
We draw from the world’s most comprehensive developmental curriculum, breaking complex skills into small, teachable steps that build real-world capability to set the child up for success. Every programme is goal-led, measurable, and continuously adapted as the child develops – so families can see clear progress over time.
Our work begins with teaching the foundational developmental skills that make higher-level learning possible: attention, imitation, communication, cooperation, and play. These core abilities open the door to meaningful progress in language, academics, and social understanding.
WE USE A MULTIDISCIPLINARY MODEL
A single therapist cannot meet every developmental need. That’s why Star Academy brings together specialists from multiple disciplines, collaborating closely to design an integrated programme for each learner.
For this reason, every child’s journey with Star begins with an Intervention Roadmapping Consultation with Ilana, where we gather a complete picture of the child’s developmental profile and identify which supports and professionals should be involved from the outset.
Our team includes:
- Board-Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs) who oversee the ABA programs and ensure quality, consistency, and continued professional development.
- Speech and language therapists who collaborate to target communication and social-language development.
- Occupational therapists who collaborate to strengthen sensory, motor, and daily-living skills. In addition, we have a specialised BCBA who is a doctor of Occupational Therapy who does oversight on cases and is responsible for continued staff development.
- Educational specialists who guide school readiness and academic learning. In addition, some of our staff have a post graduate certificates in education (PGCE) which adds curriculum knowledge and practical experience with school based training.
- Medical consultants and trusted healthcare professionals to whom families may be referred for nutritional, metabolic, or diagnostic insight when needed.
Together, this multidisciplinary team creates a developmental pathway that addresses communication, motor and social skills, executive functioning, and independence – ensuring each intervention supports and reinforces the others.
ABA EXPLAINED
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a scientifically validated and evidence-based teaching methodology grounded in decades of research. It focuses on using the principles of learning and behaviour to help children acquire essential skills, reduce harmful behaviours, and build independence. We exclusively use positive reinforcement.
ABA is a teaching methodology grounded in science, with extensive published research proving its effectiveness for individuals with autism and other developmental challenges. It is considered a time-tested pedagogical approach that has been repeatedly shown to produce meaningful improvements throughout the lifetime of individuals with autism.
ABA applies the principles of behaviour to issues that are socially significant, helping children learn new ways to communicate, connect, and cope. For some, it means acquiring the skills to live more independently; for others, it means learning to make friends or thrive in a classroom environment. ABA also helps replace behaviours that are harmful or limiting with those that promote growth and participation in everyday life.
Through the application of these principles, the Star Academy team delivers uniquely customised programmes designed to address each child’s specific challenges and developmental goals. Many decades of research have empirically proven the effectiveness of ABA for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT
SCHOOL FACILITATION AND PREPARATION
Our goal is not only to build skills but also to prepare children for school and lifelong independence. Where appropriate, we provide trained Star Academy facilitators to support children within mainstream classrooms until they can participate independently.
For learners who are not yet ready for a traditional setting, we focus on building the prerequisite developmental and learning skills needed for a successful transition in the future. Every program is designed to close developmental gaps and help each child progress toward full participation in school and community life.
ACCESSIBLE ANYWHERE
Families outside our academies can still benefit from Star Academy’s expertise through our international services. Our programmes are implemented anywhere in the world with remote oversight from South African-based case managers, ensuring consistency, quality, and measurable progress.
We support children internationally through:
- Remote sessions and parent coaching via Zoom or WhatsApp
- Placement of live-in tutors who collaborate closely with families abroad
- Remote supervision and school facilitation that maintain continuity of instruction
Wherever you are, Star Academy is here to support your child’s learning journey.
INSTRUCTION INTENSITY: HOW MANY HOURS MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Research and clinical practice consistently show that intensity matters. The number of instruction hours per week directly influences developmental outcomes.
25 – 40 hrs/ week
The gold standard for comprehensive early intervention. This level offers children the best chance for broad, lasting gains across communication, social understanding, behaviour, and independence.
10 – 20 hrs/ week
Focused intervention that produces meaningful progress in targeted areas such as speech, social skills, or behaviour regulation. Works best when parents and teachers reinforce strategies consistently.
5 hrs/ week or less
Supportive and consultative.
Useful for specific goals or parent training, but unlikely to change a child’s overall developmental trajectory unless accompanied by strong home implementation.
At Star Academy, we’ll guide you in determining the most effective intensity for your child and how to make the most of the hours you can commit to including parent coaching and school-based reinforcement. If a full programme isn’t possible for you right away, we’ll start small – targeting a few meaningful skills that show your child’s capacity to learn – allowing us to demonstrate measurable progress and reassess the programme structure once results are observed.
WHY OUR APPROACH IS DIFFERENT
Individualised, not generic: Every programme is designed around the child’s precise learning profile and developmental priorities.
- Curriculum-driven: We follow a comprehensive developmental curriculum that targets every domain of functioning – communication, social, motor, cognitive, and adaptive skills.
- Multidisciplinary by design: Education plans integrate speech, occupational therapy, medical recommendations, and behaviour analysis so that interventions reinforce one another.
- Outcome-focused: We set measurable goals and track progress continuously, so you always know how your child is developing.
- International reach: With academies across South Africa and programmes delivered throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond, we are recognised as an international centre of excellence.
- Parent partnership: Parents are coached, supported, and empowered to apply strategies at home so that progress becomes part of daily life and generalises to real-world environments.
