The Star Academy Approach
No two children with autism are alike – and no two Star Academy programmes are either. We design individualised programmes and provide one-on-one instruction. Every programme is engineered for the child we meet, built around their current abilities, deficits, developmental priorities and what motivates them most. The program is delivered in the learning environment most suited to that particular child. This can be at one of our academy’s at another mainstream school, at home or a combination of these locations.
Professional and Personal
Our approach goes beyond traditional ABA. It combines evidence-based practices with tools, strategies, and teaching techniques developed over more than 20 years by Star Academy’s Director, Ilana Gerschlowitz. Inspired by her journey to find effective educational solutions for her son David, who has autism, Ilana explored, adapted and refined methods from around the world. The result is a unique and innovative education programme that allows us to address the often complex and diverse needs of neurodiverse learners.
Developmental Curriculum
Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA)
Our approach is based on Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), a scientifically researched and evidence-based intervention for children with autism and other developmental challenges. ABA helps children develop meaningful skills and reduces barriers to learning, communication and independence.
Using positive reinforcement, we help children learn new skills, build confidence and become more independent. As they develop better ways to communicate, connect with others and manage everyday challenges, they gain the tools needed to participate more fully in family life, school and their communities.
How Many Hours Make a Difference?
Research and clinical practice consistently show that intensity matters. The number of instruction hours per week directly influences developmental outcomes. The minimum hours to enrol on our program is 10 hours a week. Some children attend full time and enrol for 40 hours a week. Other children do 20 hours a week. It depends on the unique learning needs of each individual child. The more children are provided the opportunity to practise those skills they missing or are not so good at the better they become at the more progress we see.
Our team collaborates with:
- Board-Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBAs) overseeing the ABA programmes
- Speech and language therapists
- Occupational therapists
- Educational specialists, some with post-graduate certification in education (PGCE)
- Medical consultants and trusted healthcare professionals for referral
Our team includes
The Case Manager who conducts the initial assessment and programme design. Has extensive training in childhood development and ABA and who has undergone vigorous training from experienced international trainers in the field of autism.
Instructors who implement the programme under the supervision of the Case Manager. All our instructors come from a psychology background (undergraduate or honours) and have received training in childhood development, childcare, ABA and health and safety.

Although Early Intervention is key it is never too late to start the right treatment. We work with children of all ages and of all autism presentations. We support families across South Africa and globally.

- Sleep routines
- Nutrition and dietary considerations
- Home environment and sensory factors
- Emotional regulation and wellbeing
Getting these basics right is often the difference between stalled progress and measurable gains.
